How to Change Oil in a Car: A Step-by-Step Guide

Changing your car’s oil is one of the most fundamental aspects of routine vehicle maintenance, yet it remains a task many drivers either delay or delegate entirely. Fresh oil keeps the engine clean, reduces friction, and helps maintain optimal fuel efficiency and performance over the life of the vehicle. While modern oils and engines have extended intervals between changes, understanding how to do it yourself empowers you to stay on top of maintenance schedules.

Before you begin, it is important to confirm the correct oil type, capacity, and filter for your specific make and model. The owner’s manual provides the exact viscosity, such as 5W-30 or 5W-20, along with the recommended change interval and the total oil capacity of the engine. Using the wrong viscosity or an incorrect filter can lead to poor lubrication, reduced performance, or even premature engine wear.

Gathering Tools and Preparing the Vehicle

Having the right tools on hand makes the process safer, cleaner, and more efficient. A solid preparation phase reduces the risk of mistakes and ensures you do not need to pause halfway through the job. Gather all necessary items before lifting the vehicle.

New oil filter and the correct engine oil, as specified in the owner’s manual

Socket wrench set, oil filter wrench, and an appropriately sized socket for the drain plug

Funnel, drain pan, and disposable gloves to protect your hands from hot oil and grime

Jack and jack stands or ramps, ensuring they are rated for the weight of your vehicle

Shop rag, flashlight, and a sturdy pair of safety glasses

Position the vehicle on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn the engine off. If the engine has been running, allow it to cool for at least 15 to 20 minutes so the oil is warm enough to flow freely but not hot enough to cause burns. Lift the front of the car safely using a jack and secure it with jack stands, or drive the vehicle onto ramps if using that method.

Draining the Old Oil

Locate the oil drain plug underneath the engine and place the drain pan directly beneath it. Before removing the plug, double-check that the pan is aligned with the stream of oil to avoid splashes on the underside of the vehicle. Using a socket wrench, carefully loosen the drain plug by turning it counterclockwise, then finish by hand to control its removal.

Allow the oil to drain completely until the flow slows to a drip, which usually takes a few minutes. While the oil is draining, inspect the drain plug washer for wear or damage and replace it if necessary. Once drained, securely tighten the drain plug by hand first, then snug it with the wrench, being careful not to overtighten, as this can strip the threads or damage the plug.

Removing and Replacing the Oil Filter

After draining the oil, locate the oil filter, which is typically positioned near the engine. Place the drain pan beneath the filter, as residual oil will spill out when it is removed. Use an oil filter wrench to loosen the filter, turning it counterclockwise until it can be taken off by hand.

Before installing the new filter, apply a small amount of fresh oil to the rubber gasket on the top of the filter. This ensures a proper seal and makes future removal easier. Screw the new filter onto the engine by hand, tightening it snugly, usually about three-quarters of a turn past hand-tight, but always refer to the manufacturer’s guidance on the filter packaging.

Pouring Fresh Oil and Checking the Level

With the drain plug secured and the new filter in place, position the funnel into the oil fill opening under the hood. Slowly pour in the recommended quantity and type of oil, pausing periodically to check the dipstick. This gradual approach prevents overfilling and allows air to escape from the system.
