Changing the oil and filter is the single most effective maintenance task a vehicle owner can perform to ensure long-term reliability. This procedure removes accumulated contaminants and degraded lubricant, allowing the engine to operate at optimal temperature and efficiency. While often perceived as a complex undertaking, the process is straightforward with the right preparation and attention to detail.
Preparation and Safety
Before any physical work begins, safety and preparation are paramount. The vehicle must be parked on a level surface, the parking brake engaged, and the engine turned off and allowed to cool. Raising a vehicle on jack stands without proper jack points is extremely dangerous, so drive onto ramps if you lack a suitable lift. Gather all necessary tools beforehand, including a socket set, oil filter wrench, drain pan, funnel, and personal protective equipment like gloves and eye protection.
Draining the Old Oil
Locating the oil drain plug underneath the engine is the first step in the draining process. Place the drain pan directly beneath the plug, ensuring it is positioned to catch the full stream of oil. Using the correct socket size, carefully loosen the drain plug by turning it counter-clockwise, then finish the removal by hand to control the initial flow. Allow the oil to drain completely until the stream slows to a drip, which indicates that the majority of the used lubricant has been expelled.
Inspecting the Drain Plug and Washer
While the oil is draining, inspect the drain plug and its sealing washer or gasket for signs of wear or damage. A crushed or brittle washer will not create a proper seal upon reinstallation, leading to future leaks. If the washer is compromised, it is essential to replace it with a new one recommended by the vehicle manufacturer to maintain the correct torque specifications and prevent stripping the bolt.
Removing the Old Filter
With the oil drained, attention shifts to the oil filter, which traps contaminants circulating through the lubrication system. Locate the filter, which is usually positioned near the engine block, and place the drain pan beneath it to catch residual oil. An oil filter wrench is typically required to loosen the cylindrical housing. Remember that filters are installed with significant torque to ensure a tight seal, so applying steady, firm pressure is necessary for removal.
Preparing the New Filter
Prior to installing the new filter, a critical preparatory step ensures a proper seal and prevents dry startup damage. Apply a thin, even layer of fresh engine oil to the gasket located on the top rim of the new filter. This lubrication allows the gasket to seat smoothly against the mounting surface without tearing. Additionally, hand-tightening the new filter initially provides the necessary baseline before the final tightening sequence.
Final Installation and Refill
Once the old filter is removed and the new one prepared, carefully screw the new filter onto the engine by hand, turning it clockwise. Most manufacturers recommend tightening the filter to the point where it is snug, plus an additional quarter to half turn, though specific torque specs vary. After the filter is secure, replace the drain plug and tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque to avoid stripping the threads or causing a leak.
Post-Change Procedures
With the new filter and drain plug installed, position the funnel in the oil filler port and pour in the recommended quantity and grade of new oil. Consult the owner’s manual for the exact capacity and viscosity rating, as using the incorrect specification can lead to performance issues. After the refill, start the engine and allow it to run for several minutes, then turn it off and wait a few minutes for the oil to settle in the pan.
