Driving with low oil puts excessive stress on components like bearings and camshafts, leading to expensive repairs that could have been avoided with a ten-minute check. Locating the Dipstick
The dipstick is a long metal rod with a brightly colored handle, typically located near the front of the engine bay. Its color is often yellow, orange, or red, making it easy to spot against the background of hoses and wiring. If you are unsure of its location, consult the owner’s manual for specific guidance, as the positioning varies significantly between vehicle makes and models. Once identified, grasp the handle firmly and pull the dipstick straight out, being prepared for some oil residue on the end.
Reading the Measurements
After removing the dipstick, wipe it clean using a lint-free rag or paper towel to remove old oil.
